Picture this, a heavy lifting crane arrives on a building site early one morning. By the end of the day a 421 square metre 3 level, 5 bedroom home stands tall. Over the next few days glazing, cabinetry and the finishing touches are added. By the end of the week the home is complete ready for the owners to move in. This is exactly what happened in April 2006 when Steve Glenn founder of LivingHomes constructed his own home in Santa Monica, California.
LivingHomes is a sustainable building company manufacturing prefabricated homes that offer great form & functionality and are healthy and extremely respectful to the environments in which they are built. Each home is comprised of various modules that are built in a factory and then trucked out to the building site where they are assembled with a crane. This type of construction reduces a lot of material waste which is associated with traditional building methods.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) awarded LivingHomes a platinum rating for its eco friendly housing design. LivingHomes has gone to great lengths to ensure that their homes are as environmentally friendly as possible. Many of their homes components are made from recycled materials. As an example the insulation is made from a denim material that is recycled from old jeans. Greywater is caught by a large cistern that is used to irrigate the gardens. The irrigation system is also connected to a weather sensor that will not allow watering if rain is forecast for that day. Lighting within the house is from super efficient light emitting diodes that can last up to 10 years per bulb. The roof of the house is fitted with photovoltaic cells which convert solar energy into power handling 80% of the homes power needs. These are just some of the extraordinary lengths that LivingHomes have gone to in creating their Green prefabricated homes. The above pictured house was designed for LivingHomes by architect Ray Kappe. He initially had the idea for this type of modular house 40 years ago but wasn't able to generate enough interest to get it built. "Sustainability is a real buzzword this year" says Kappe. Thanks to increased interest in sustainable, green housing LivingHomes is recieving enquiries from all over the world. For more information please visit - www.livinghomes.net |
